Did you know that the last Saturday in April is Independent Bookstore Day? This is a day to celebrate Independent Bookstores across the globe that are undoubtedly making positive impacts in communities.
We decided to celebrate by visiting New Beacon Books, the 1st black bookstore in the U.K.
There was a wide range of books and a great selection of children’s books too. We added ‘Choices, choices…’ by Dawne Allete to our collection which included a cool heigh chart too.
Having celebrated its 50 year anniversary just last year, as you can imagine this bookstore is steeped in history. For example, it played an integral part in the 1981 New Cross Fire protest which garnered the support of over 20,000 peaceful attendees.
Patrons who entered the shop were greeted with such warmth and hospitality and it felt like everyone inside was a part of a big family.
We definitely recommend visiting if you're in need of a good book and to experience this historically awesome bookstore. We'll surely be visiting again.
